No More Dieting (do this instead)

Dieting is exhausting.

When most people think about dieting, they think about restriction. Rules. Good foods and bad foods. Starting over on Monday. And the truth is that all of those things have kept us stuck and in the grips of diet culture for way too long. One thing I say to our health coaching and retreat guests all the time is that restriction doesn’t equal health. In fact, it often creates the opposite — a cycle of guilt, shame, frustration, and disconnection from your body.

When I think about ditching dieting and diet culture, I always come back to the concept that health isn’t built through punishment. It should never be built through punishment. Health is our everything when it comes to feeling and functioning our best and longevity. It should be celebrated. Dieting promotes an all-or-nothing mindset and teaches you to distrust yourself instead of learning how to listen to your body.

Our mission here is different. It’s about helping you ditch the diet and learn how to truly support yourself — mentally, emotionally, and physically. It’s about nourishment on every level, not just what’s on your plate.

If you’re ready to start the process of ditching the dieter mentality, we’ve got more tips below. ↓

Out With the Old → In With the New

Instead of trying harder at dieting, it’s time to change the framework entirely. Sustainable wellness isn’t built through more rules — it’s built through nourishment, self-trust, and habits that support your real life.

Here’s what we’re consciously moving away from — and what we’re stepping into instead:

Out: Restriction → In: Nourishment
Restriction puts your body in defense mode. Nourishment creates safety, balance, and trust — allowing hunger, energy, and cravings to naturally regulate over time. Think a healthy balance of protein, carbs, healthy fats and colorful foods. Textures, depth of flavor, and vibrant foods and drinks that actually give your body what it needs.

Out: Dieting → In: Health
Diets are temporary. Health is ongoing. Shifting your focus to health allows flexibility, sustainability, and choices rooted in self-care rather than control. We have this notion that metabolism is a simple process - calories in vs calories out. It is not. It is the way your body uses energy to facilitate every function of the body.

Out: Quick Fixes → In: A Sustainable Lifestyle
Quick fixes rely on urgency and burnout. A sustainable lifestyle grows slowly, realistically, and in a way that supports your day-to-day life. Focusing on quick fixes lends you to short-term success and a perpetual cycle of starting and stopping. Sustainability creates results that you can rely on.

Out: One-Size-Fits-All Plans → In: Leaning Into What Works for You
Your body, preferences, and needs are unique. True progress happens when you tune into what helps you feel your best — not what works for everyone else. Read that again. Learning to slow down and tune into your physiology and your lifestyle circumstances becomes a super power.

Out: “I Can’t” → In: “I Choose”
“I can’t” creates deprivation. “I choose” creates empowerment. This simple shift in language changes how your nervous system and mindset respond to food. What you say repeatedly becomes directive for your brain. Repeat what you want - not what you don’t.

Out: Weight Loss as the Only Goal → In: Overall Wellness
When wellness becomes the priority — energy, digestion, strength, mood — weight often shifts naturally as a byproduct of better support.

Out: “My Body Isn’t Enough” → In: Gratitude for Everything Your Body Does for You
Gratitude builds partnership with your body. When you appreciate what your body does, caring for it becomes more natural and compassionate.

Out: Chasing Skinny → In: Becoming a Vibrant, Energized Being
“Skinny” is a look. Vitality is a feeling. When energy, strength, and resilience lead the way, your choices support a fuller, more nourished life.

Out: Judgment and Shame → In: Acceptance and Grace
Shame shuts growth down. It keeps you stuck. It keeps you small. Shame keeps you from stepping into your true identity. Grace creates space for learning, consistency, and long-term change.

Out: Obsessing Over Calories → In: Energy, Nourishment, and Satisfaction
Calories are one data point — not the whole story. Paying attention to how food fuels you leads to better balance and trust over time.

Out: What Everyone Else Is Doing → In: What Actually Works for Me
Comparison creates noise. Self-awareness creates clarity. Your most sustainable path is the one that fits your life - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Your Wellness Identity Matters

One of the most overlooked parts of sustainable health is identity.

Ask yourself:

  • Who am I becoming?

  • What does my healthiest self value?

  • How does she move through her day?

  • How does she care for her body, her energy, her nervous system?

When you start to see yourself as someone who prioritizes nourishment, balance, and self-respect, your choices begin to align naturally. You’re no longer forcing behaviors — you’re expressing who you are.

Wellness isn’t something you do temporarily. It’s something you embody.

Coach’s Notes: Steps to Create Real Change (Without Dieting)

Here are a few steps to begin taking towards your true self and ditching diets for good. - Margot

Reframe your journey
This isn’t about fixing yourself. It’s about supporting yourself. You’re not behind — you’re learning.

Start to dispel negative self-talk
Notice when critical thoughts pop up and gently challenge them. Would you speak to a friend that way?

Embrace nutrition that supports overall wellness
Focus on foods that help you feel energized, satisfied, and grounded — not deprived.

Use neuroplasticity to your advantage
Your brain changes through repetition. Build one doable habit at a time. Small, consistent actions create new neural pathways that make healthy choices feel natural over time.

Tune into what works for YOU
Mindful eating, noticing patterns, understanding hunger and fullness, recognizing how foods make you feel — this information is gold.

Remember: nothing needs to happen all at once
You don’t need a perfect plan or a total overhaul. Change happens through accumulation, not intensity.

The Bottom Line

No more dieting. No more fighting your body. No more chasing someone else’s version of health.

Instead, choose nourishment. Choose curiosity. Choose habits that support the life you actually want to live.

This is life — and it’s meant to be lived.
And when your approach to health comes from care instead of control, everything changes.
