Mindfulness 101

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a term that has been thrown around a lot lately. It’s like a buzzword that pops up all over the place. You’ll read recommendations from experts to be more mindful. Use mindfulness to tune into yourself. What exactly is mindfulness though?

Mindfulness is our ability to be present and aware of what we’re feeling and experiencing in the present moment.

Slowing down and tuning in can be an important tool when it comes to understanding our bodies, our thoughts, and our feelings. It can be used in any facet of life - health and wellness, weight loss, career, relationships, and more. Mindfulness can be the act of just being - being present right now without an intention. It can simply be noticing and naming what you’re feeling right this very second.

How can mindfulness be helpful? It allows us to slow down, tune in, and understand what we’re thinking, feeling, and experiencing. We can gather our own internal information and apply it in any way we see fit. Maybe your goal is just to begin noticing and naming how you feel in a specific moment. You might be looking for a way to understand your emotions and your reactions in certain situations. Maybe you want to understand how your body feels and functions at its best. You might use mindfulness to determine which foods help you facilitate proper digestion as another example. Or maybe, you want to know what drives you in your career. You might find that a specific task or project cultivates creativity for you as an example. It could be that you’re looking to shift your thoughts to a more positive route. No matter the situation, mindfulness can help guide us in all of these examples.

Many people are living in a time-starved world or environment. This rush, rush lifestyle doesn’t allow for the time to tune in so mindfulness is something that can easily be overlooked. It takes time, practice, and patience with yourself to develop this skill consistently.

How To Incorporate Mindfulness

What can mindfulness look like and how do I implement it? Mindfulness requires intentionality.

  • Find time once per day to sit in quiet (this might be 30 - 60 seconds or much longer depending on you).

  • Set a reminder on your phone to slow down and tune in. This could be at a specific time of day, or it could be just a general reminder to be more present.

  • Journal. Jot your thoughts down at the end of the day as an example.

  • Apps & Videos. Check out mindfulness apps or YouTube for a method that works for you.

  • Get Clear. Understand which area of life you want to gain more mindfulness in - health & wellness, weight loss, career, emotional stability, relationships, mindset, stress management, career, creativity, or another focus. Getting clear on where you need to dial in can be the first step in understanding how mindfulness can help you.
