The Real Reason Diets Don't Work

A client told me recently, "I hope this is the one. I've tried everything else."

She was talking about a new high-protein plan. And I've heard some version of that sentence more times than I can count — keto, low-carb, macros, whatever the current program happens to be. There's always this quiet hope attached to it: maybe this is finally the thing that works.

Here's what stands out to me every single time. It's never about the diet.

If you're someone who keeps searching outside yourself for the right diet, the right protocol, the perfect plan — you're probably always going to be searching. Not because you haven't found the right one yet. Because the thing you're actually looking for isn't a plan at all.

Why This Matters

There isn't one diet that works for everyone. There isn't even one diet that's going to work for you — not forever, anyway. What actually has to happen is that you learn your own body and your own lifestyle well enough to customize whatever program you're using. The program is a framework. You're the variable that makes it work.

Let's say you're doing a high-protein, lower-carb plan. It requires meal prepping every Sunday for the week ahead. You're noticing real benefits — but you're also noticing a couple of things that don't quite fit.

Maybe Sunday prep is more than your schedule can absorb right now. It doesn't work with your job, your family, your actual life — you just don't like spending your whole Sunday in the kitchen, and that's allowed to matter.

Or maybe it's something in your body talking back to you: an afternoon energy slump that's bigger than anything you dealt with before this diet.

Those are two different problems, and they need two different kinds of attention.

One is practical — your time, your responsibilities, your real-world constraints. The fix there might be logistical: prepping half the week instead of all of it, or finding a shortcut that still gets you fed.

The other is physiological. If your energy is tanking in the afternoons, that's data. It doesn't necessarily mean the whole plan is wrong — it might mean this exact version of it isn't supporting you yet, and something needs to shift so it can.

Either way, the fix isn't "quit and go find a new diet." The fix is: notice, adapt, keep going.

There's a Pattern Underneath the Pattern

Here's what I actually think is going on for a lot of people who keep searching for "the one."

Aside from the practical piece — the fact that no single diet works for everyone — there's something else happening underneath it. The searching itself becomes a habit. Not finding it becomes a habit. You start to consistently feel like the answer is somewhere you haven't looked yet, which means you're always one step outside of having what you need.

Neuroscientist Emily McDonald talks about how you're always practicing something. Every time you don't find it, you're not just failing to find the right fit. You're reinforcing the loop of searching, again. That loop can become its own obstacle — separate from, and sometimes bigger than, whatever the diet itself was ever going to solve.

Which is exactly why tuning into your body and learning what actually works for you matters. It's not just about getting better information. It's about interrupting a pattern you've been practicing without meaning to.

The Practical Application

This applies to more than food. It applies to almost anything in health and wellness you're trying to build a habit around.

  • Notice what's actually happening — not just whether you're "sticking to the plan," but how your energy, your schedule, and your body are responding to it.

  • Separate the kinds of problems. Different problems call for different solutions.

    • Is this a lifestyle fit issue?

    • Does it have more to do with your body and how it responds?

    • Is it a personal preference problem? Personal preferences DO matter.

    • Could this have to do with a mindset or stress scenario? Does the habit or action step actually create more stress for you? If so, it’s worth rethinking.

  • Adapt the framework instead of abandoning it. Small adjustments almost always beat starting over.

  • Remember the program was never supposed to be the finish line. It's a starting structure you're meant to make your own.

Coach's Notes

The goal was never to find the perfect program. The goal is to understand yourself well enough that any program becomes something you can shape instead of something you have to survive.

When you're chasing "the one that finally works," you stay stuck evaluating diets. When you turn that same attention toward your own body and your own patterns, you stop needing the perfect plan — because you've built the skill of adapting whatever plan you're on.

That's not a failure to find the right answer. That's the answer.
