Why Your Smallest Habit Might Be Your Most Powerful

One of my coaching clients said something to me recently that completely stopped me. She gave me a brief account of her week and at the end of her message, she said,

"I know this might sound small, but putting on my Fitbit every morning and stepping on the scale really helps keep me on track."

At first, it might not sound like a big deal. After all, it's just a Fitbit. It’s just a number on a scale, right? Just another morning routine.

But what stood out to me was this... It had absolutely nothing to do with the Fitbit or stepping on the scale. It had everything to do with the discovery of a small habit that has become a game changer.

The Bigger Lesson

For her, that tiny morning ritual had become something much bigger.

It was a reminder. A reset. It is a way of reconnecting with the person she wanted to become (and actually is).

Every morning, before the day got busy, before work, family, and life pulled her in a hundred different directions, she was quietly telling herself:

"My goals matter to me."

That one small action anchored her back to her identity and her goals. And it’s not that it’s just one small action (actually two small actions) but it’s the repetition and the consistency of it that she has built. All of our successes are built over time and we’re constantly reinforcing who we are through our actions.

And Here's What Happened...

We've been working together for about 23 weeks. During that time, I watched subtle shifts happen. Not because she suddenly became "perfect." Not because she found the magical workout or because she followed a perfect meal plan.

Instead...

She started going to the gym consistently. Some days she lifted weights. Some days she went to Zumba. Some days she took a yoga class. She became more active with her family.

She started feeling stronger, and more capable and more confident.

Then she said something that really stood out to me. "I feel really strong...and really positive." That's the transformation. That’s not just about weight loss and not just healthier habits. This is about a completely different relationship with herself.

This actually reminds me of a story James Clear shares about building habits. Someone wanted to become more active but wasn't asked to start running every morning or commit to an hour at the gym. Instead, the first step was simply placing their running shoes by the front door each day. After a while, putting the shoes by the door naturally led to putting them on. Before long, they started stepping outside. Eventually, those small actions grew into regular workouts.

On the surface, putting your shoes by the door doesn't seem like much. But that wasn't really the point. The shoes weren't changing anything on their own. They were creating a cue—a small ritual that made the next healthy choice feel a little more natural.

I want to highlight that you can start from anywhere. What you think is insignificant or small may not be. It might be the pivotal action step you need for real change.

Why Tiny Habits Matter

People often assume lasting change comes from one huge decision. It’s the mindset that once you decide to change your health, or lose weight, or even change your mindset, that you have to do it all at once. I rarely see it happen that way.

Instead, I see tiny habits repeated over and over again until they become part of someone's identity.

Every time you repeat a healthy behavior, you're strengthening a pathway in your brain.

You're reinforcing the belief: "This is what I do."

Eventually... "This is who I am."

That's where real change happens. This is neuroplasticity.

Find Your Anchor Habit

I like to think of these as anchor habits. They're the small actions that reconnect you to your goals. The habit itself isn't magical - it's what it represents and how it ties you to the person that you are and the goals you’re achieving.

Your anchor habit might be:

  • Putting on your smartwatch each morning.

  • Filling your favorite water bottle.

  • Making your morning smoothie.

  • Going for a 10-minute walk.

  • Writing one sentence in your journal.

  • Stretching for five minutes.

  • Reading an affirmation.

  • Planning tomorrow's lunch.

These habits might not seem life-changing on their own. But together? They become the foundation of lasting change.

 
 

Here's Something I Encourage My Clients to Notice

Don't ask yourself, "What's the biggest thing I need to change?"

Instead ask, "What's the smallest habit that helps me reconnect to the person I want to become?" And beyond that, it might be which habit helps you feel and function your best without a ton of effort? Often times, we’re so busy caught up in life that we don’t even notice what’s working.

Maybe it’s about taking a second to actually think through the little things.

  • My morning coffee grounds me

  • I appreciate the 5 minutes I get in the morning while getting ready for quiet time

  • My commute offers me the time to think through my day and get organized in my thoughts

  • Packing my lunch helps me stay on track

  • That water bottle that I bought is really helping me stay hydrated

You get the point. Because when life gets busy—and it will—you always have something simple to come back to.

Time to Get Clear on Your Fitbit

So here's something to think about. Let’s gain clarity.

What's your "Fitbit?"

What's the one small habit that reminds you, "I'm taking care of myself today."

Maybe it's your morning coffee on the porch, putting on your walking shoes, it's tracking your protein, or making your bed.

Maybe it's stepping outside for five deep breaths.

Whatever it is...

Notice and name it and then protect it. Capitalize off of it and keep repeating it daily. Because it may end up being the habit that keeps every other healthy habit moving forward.

Pay attention to the habits that naturally reconnect you to your goals. Notice the routines that help you feel grounded. Notice what helps you follow through.

Those are valuable clues. They're showing you what works for you.
