Slow Living for Fall: 25 Simple Ways to Slow Down & Savor the Season

I love the idea of slow living. It just feels good when I think about it. And I would say that most people who attend our wellness retreats come to escape the grind of everyday life and indulge in a little bit of slow living. And as we continue diving into fall, we start to get into the season of hustle and bustle so retaining that balance is essential.

There’s something about the change of seasons that invites us to pause. I don’t know about you but I feel a different energy in the air anytime there’s a season change. As summer fades and fall begins, it can be a natural opportunity to slow down, tune in, and reconnect with what matters most.

But slow living doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything slowly. It doesn’t mean stepping away from your responsibilities, becoming less productive, or suddenly having hours of free time every day.

Slow living is more about how you experience your life than how fast you move through it.

It’s about being more mindful of what you need, what matters to you, where your energy is going, and how you want to spend your time. It’s about creating more opportunities for the things that restore you, bring you joy, create peace of mind, help your body relax, and allow you to feel more present in your own life.

And sometimes, slowing down means getting out of your own head for a little while. Looking up. Paying attention to the people around you. Enjoying where you are. Being present for a conversation instead of thinking about what you need to do next.

Presence is a big part of slow living. Just being able to be present for yourself, for your friends, loved ones and anyone or anything that’s important to you brings a greater sense of connection.

Before You Start: What Does Slow Living Mean to You?

Slow living doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. And it honestly doesn’t have to. Before you start adding slow-living habits to your routine, take a moment to think about what you actually want. What would a slower, more intentional life look like for you?

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want more of in my life?

  • What do I want less of?

  • How do I want to feel on a regular basis?

  • What helps me feel peaceful, grounded, or restored?

  • What brings me genuine joy?

  • Where do I feel rushed or disconnected?

  • What would it look like to be more present with myself, my family, my work, or the people I care about?

  • What small changes would actually feel good and realistic for me right now?

  • When you picture your life, what is a scene that comes up in your mind that equals slow living for you?

You don't have to overhaul your life to live more intentionally.

In fact, the best place to start may be with one small thing that feels meaningful to you.

25 Slow Living Ideas for Fall

Think of this list as inspiration, not a checklist. Choose the things that resonate with you and leave the rest.

Create More Peace

  1. Start your morning without immediately reaching for your phone.
Give yourself a few quiet minutes before the outside world starts asking for your attention.

  2. Take a walk without a destination.
Leave the house simply to move, breathe, notice your surroundings, and get some fresh air.

  3. Create a slower evening routine.
Dim the lights, put your phone away, make tea, read, stretch, or simply sit for a few minutes before bed.

  4. Give yourself more time than you think you need.
Rushing from one thing to the next can create unnecessary stress. Build a little breathing room into your day.

  5. Do one thing at a time.
Eat without working. Talk without checking your phone. Watch the sunset without photographing it. Let yourself be where you are.

Make Room for Joy

  1. Make something cozy just because you enjoy it.
Cook a favorite meal, bake something, make soup, or create a beautiful breakfast.

  2. Listen to music you love.
Not while you're working. Not while you're cleaning. Just listen.

  3. Plan something you genuinely look forward to.
It doesn't have to be a big trip. A dinner with friends, a weekend outing, a beach day, or an afternoon exploring somewhere new can give you something to anticipate.

  4. Do something that makes you laugh.
Call the friend who always makes you laugh. Watch a funny movie. Play with your kids. Don't underestimate the importance of joy.

  5. Bring a little beauty into your everyday life.
Fresh flowers, a candle, a beautiful meal, a favorite sweater, music in the kitchen — small things can change how an ordinary day feels.

Be More Present

  1. Have a meal without a screen.
Pay attention to the food, the conversation, and how you feel.

  2. Spend time with someone without an agenda.
Go for a walk, sit outside, have coffee, or simply be together.

  3. Put your phone away when you're with people you love.
Presence is one of the simplest ways to slow down.

  4. Notice your surroundings.
The temperature outside. The light coming through the windows. The sounds around you. The feeling of your feet on the ground.

  5. Let yourself be bored sometimes.
You don't have to fill every quiet moment with scrolling, productivity, or entertainment.

Embrace Fall

  1. Take a fall walk and actually notice the season.
Look at the changing colors, feel the cooler air, and notice what's different from a few weeks ago.

  2. Spend time outside during the best part of the day.
Maybe that's early morning, late afternoon, or sunset. Find the time that feels good to you.

  3. Make a seasonal meal.
Think roasted vegetables, soup, chili, apples, pumpkin, squash, or whatever feels like fall to you.

  4. Visit somewhere you've never been in your own area.
A new trail, coffee shop, market, garden, neighborhood, or small town can make home feel like a getaway.

  5. Create a fall ritual.
Maybe it's Saturday morning coffee, a weekly walk, Sunday meal prep, reading by the window, or an evening outside.

  6. Spend an afternoon doing less.
No packed itinerary. No productivity goals. Just see where the day takes you.

Reconnect With Yourself

  1. Ask yourself what you need right now.
Not what you should need. Not what everyone else needs from you. What do you actually need?

  2. Journal about what you want more of this season.
Think beyond goals and accomplishments. What do you want to experience? How do you want to feel?

  3. Choose one thing to let go of.
A commitment, expectation, habit, obligation, or belief that no longer fits the life you're trying to create.

  4. Create more space for the things that restore you.
Movement. Nature. Rest. Connection. Creativity. Quiet. Time alone. Time with people you love. Whatever helps you feel more like yourself.

Slow Living Isn't About Doing Less

The beautiful thing about slow living is that it doesn't have to look a certain way.

For one person, it might mean a quiet morning with coffee and a book. For someone else, it might mean spending an afternoon at the beach with friends, cooking dinner with family, taking a long walk, or finally making time for something they've been missing.

The point isn't to create a slower life just for the sake of being slow. It's to become more intentional about how you're living. And to be present enough to actually experience your life while you're living it.

As we move into a new season, maybe that's the invitation: pause, tune in, and ask yourself what you need more of now.
