Finding Inner Peace During Stressful & Challenging Times
/Author: Margot Rutigliano, Founder Vita Vie Retreat
In times of uncertainty, change, or emotional overload, it’s easy to feel like the ground beneath us is shifting. We may lose our sense of center, feel disconnected, overwhelmed, or even a little lost. But there’s a reason why our minds spiral when life gets heavy—and there are ways to find peace, even when everything feels anything but peaceful.
What Stress Does to the Brain
When we go through stressful times, our brains are not just reacting emotionally—they're actually reorganizing. Neuroscience tells us that when we're under chronic stress or an acute stress event, the brain's normal reference points—the predictable routines, the safe signals, the “all is well” cues—start to disappear or become distorted.
This lack of orientation triggers the brain’s survival systems. Our subconscious kicks into protective mode. This might look like heightened anxiety, irritability, brain fog, or a feeling of being “on edge.” It’s your brain's way of saying, something is off, and it's scanning for threats, even if they're not immediately visible.
The result? We enter fight-or-flight mode. And when we stay there too long, our bodies and minds pay the price.
So, What Can We Do?
The good news is this: there are ways to gently guide your brain and body back to a place of calm. Here are four tools to help you find inner peace—even during life’s more chaotic seasons.
1. Control What You Can
When the world feels out of control, create anchors in your day.
Build a simple daily schedule or routine. This might include waking up at the same time, taking a morning walk, preparing a healthy meal, or ending the day with a bit of journaling. These consistent practices give your brain a sense of rhythm and predictability—exactly what it craves when everything else feels uncertain.
Self-care isn’t just a luxury—it’s regulation. Taking care of your body, your sleep, your hydration, and your boundaries is a way of telling your nervous system: you’re safe now.
2. Find Something Familiar
Familiarity is powerful. It brings a sense of grounding. When your mind is spinning, return to something or someone that makes you feel connected and at ease.
That might be:
Your favorite local coffee shop with its comforting smells and quiet hum
A favorite meal
A chat with a close friend who just gets you
A warm hug from your partner
Playing with your dog or cat and feeling the joy in their simplicity
These moments may seem small, but they tell the brain: things are okay, you’re not alone.
3. Seek Joy—Big or Small
Joy doesn’t have to be grand. It can be a five-minute dance party in your kitchen, a hilarious meme that makes you laugh out loud, or the way sunlight filters through the trees on your walk.
Happiness and peace are often found in the micro-moments.
Try:
Watching a movie that makes you laugh
Listening to music that lifts your spirit
Practicing gratitude—write down three things you’re thankful for today
Getting creative with a hobby or craft
These little sparks of joy soothe the nervous system and help restore emotional balance.
4. Regulate Your Nervous System
Sometimes, the brain and body need more than mindset shifts—they need tools to discharge stress.
Try nervous system regulation techniques like:
Breathwork: Slow, deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, calming your mind and body.
EFT Tapping: Also known as emotional freedom technique, this gentle tapping method helps clear emotional blocks and reduce stress.
Grounding exercises: Touch something textured, plant your feet on the ground, or use your senses to reconnect with the present.
These practices support your body in returning to safety—and that’s where peace lives.
Inner peace isn't about eliminating all stress. It’s about cultivating calm, even while chaos exists around you. It's about giving your brain the familiarity, safety, and joy it needs to stop reacting and start relaxing.
Next time you feel the spiral, pause. Breathe. Find one small thing you can control, one familiar comfort, one flicker of joy.
You are capable of returning to your calm center. One breath, one moment, one step at a time.
