Essential Oils For Home Cleaning

Essential oils from plant extracts and are safe to clean your home.

CLEAN YOUR HOME WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

I love essential oils because they’re so versatile! I use them for cleaning. I diffuse them in my home to benefit from the oils in the air but also because they smell so good! I also use them topically on my skin for certain reasons. However you use them, they’re fantastic for so many reasons!

It’s spring time and that means spring cleaning is in full effect for many of you. Time to freshen up the house and open the windows! Essential oils are a great non-toxic option for many of the cleaning products that you use in your home. They are extracted from plants making them an all natural solution. Plus, their scent is fresh, natural and clean and won’t leave toxic residue in your home.

My favorite brands of essential oils are Rocky Mountain Oils and Aura Cacia. They’re both based in the United States and offer a conventional line and 100% organic line of essential oils. (By the way – I don’t get any benefits by referring these brands.)

The ideas below use all natural and/or organic ingredients because those are my personal preferences. I like to keep my products as natural and chemical free as possible. That being said, please use the products that you prefer and see fit for your home and lifestyle.

Here are a few great “recipes” for essential oil cleaners:

5 ESSENTIAL OIL RECIPES FOR CLEANING

Stove Top or Counter Cleaner
1/4 cup all-natural dish soap
1 cup baking soda
15 drops LemonLime or Orange Essential Oil (or 5 drops each)

Combine all ingredients in a small jar and let sit for 1 hour. Scrub on stove with sponge and let sit. Wipe away with a wet cloth.

*Option: Diffuse 5 drops of each essential oil in your home for a light, citrus scent. See bottom of this post for diffuser.

Fresh Toilet Scrub
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup all-natural dish soap
15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil

Combine in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray in toilet and let sit for up to 2 hours. Scrub and flush.

All Purpose Cleaner (this one is antibacterial and antimicrobial!)
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups organic white vinegar (or regular white vinegar if that’s what you have on hand)
1 teaspoon all-natural dish soap
10 drops Lemon essential oil
5 drops Lavender essential oil
10 drops Lime essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray where desired – counter tops, tables, etc – please be careful on granite or other materials that may be sensitive.

Carpet Refresher/Cleaner
3 part water
1 part organic white vinegar
25 – 30 drops Lemon essential oil

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and mix well. If refreshing carpet, simply spray a very light layer on carpet and vacuum an hour later (or more depending on how long you’d like it to sit). If using this as a stain remover, soak stain with mixture. Let sit for up to approximately 20 minutes (you may need to check stain spot in between to see progress). Scrub and soak up with a cloth.

Tub and Shower Cleaner Gel
1 cup organic white vinegar
1/2 cup all-natural dish soap
10 drops basil essential oil + 5 drops lime essential oil

Combine in a squeeze bottle and shake well. Squeeze on desired area, scrub and let sit for 2 hours. Wash away residue.

*Option: Diffuse 5 – 10 drops of each essential oil in your home for a light, citrus scent. See bottom of this post for diffuser.

Homemade Window Cleaner
2/3 cup organic white vinegar
1 1/3 cups water
5 drops Lemon essential oil

Combine all of the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray window or mirror and wipe.
