15 Free Ways to Help Restore Your Health
/Restoring your health and wellness doesn't always mean taking another medication, adding another supplement, starting another diet, or following another protocol.
Oftentimes, it means allowing yourself to slow down enough to actually listen to yourself. To understand your body. To pay attention to what feels good, what doesn't, what you need more of, and what you may need less of.
In the busyness of life, we can get caught up listening to everyone else but ourselves. We're constantly being told what we should eat, how we should exercise, how much we should weigh, how productive we should be, and what we need to do to be healthier.
But what if restoring your health starts with simply getting quiet enough to hear yourself again?
Here are some simple, completely free ways to support your health and wellness.
→ If you want a system that walks you through how to build a wellness plan unique for you, we’ve also created The Mind + Body Lab, but let’s dive into the info in this post first.
Take a Break
Take a five-minute break. Take an afternoon off. Take a day off. Take a week away if you can.
We often think that taking a break means we're falling behind, when sometimes it's exactly what allows us to come back with more clarity and focus.
Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, says, “In order to have focus, we must escape to focus.”
And it's so true. Sometimes we need time away from the things that are constantly pulling at us in order to focus on ourselves.
Get Some Morning Sunlight
Step outside in the morning and let yourself get some natural light.
Morning light can help support your body's natural circadian rhythm, which plays an important role in sleep and wakefulness. And being outside first thing in the morning gives you a chance to start the day away from your phone, your computer, and everyone else's demands.
Take a few minutes. Breathe. Look around. Let the day begin before you jump into it.
Go Outside
Spend some time in nature.
Take a slow walk. Sit under a tree. Walk on the beach. Notice the sounds, the smells, the breeze, and everything around you.
You don't have to turn every walk into a workout. Sometimes a slower, more mindful walk gives you the opportunity to think things through, clear your head, move your body, get your blood flowing, and simply be present.
Move Your Body
Your body is designed to move.
Walk. Stretch. Dance in your kitchen. Do a few squats. Take the stairs. Move your joints through their full range of motion.
Movement doesn't have to be a structured workout to be valuable. Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply get up and move after sitting for too long.
Learn How to Say No
Learn how to say no to other things so you can say yes to yourself.
You don't have to say yes to every invitation, every request, every responsibility, or every opportunity.
This is where boundaries come in. Protecting your time and energy isn't selfish. Sometimes saying no is exactly what creates the space you need to take care of yourself.
Smile More
Find more reasons to smile.
Spend time with a friend who makes you laugh. Watch a funny show. Put on a movie you love. Play with your kids. Call someone who always makes you laugh.
We can get so focused on everything that needs to be fixed that we forget to enjoy the things that are already good.
Learn to Appreciate the Little Things
Practice noticing what is already around you.
Your morning coffee. A beautiful sunset. A good conversation. Your favorite song. A great meal. A walk outside. A quiet house. A good night's sleep.
It doesn't have to be something big to matter. There is so much happening in our everyday lives that we can easily overlook when we're constantly focused on what's next.
Forgive Yourself
Forgive yourself for the things you've done in the past.
You didn't know then what you know now.
We're all evolving, growing, and learning. When you look back on something from years ago, you're looking at it with knowledge, experience, and insight that you didn't have at that particular time.
That doesn't mean you ignore the past. It means you can learn from it without continuing to punish yourself for it.
Have a Real Conversation
Put the phone down and have a real conversation.
Connect with your loved ones, your friends, your family, your coworkers, or someone in your community. Join a class, volunteer, attend a community event, or simply sit down and talk with someone.
We're more connected digitally than ever, but that doesn't always mean we're experiencing real connection.
Sometimes you just need to sit across from another person and talk.
Nourish Your Body
Nourishing your body doesn't have to follow a particular diet or protocol.
Pay attention to how food makes you feel. Are you satisfied after you eat? Do you have energy? Does your mood feel balanced? Are you sleeping well? Are you getting the nutrients your body needs?
Maybe nourishing yourself means eating more vegetables. Maybe it means adding more protein. Maybe it means eating a meal instead of skipping one because you're too busy.
The goal isn't to find the perfect diet. It's to learn how to nourish your body in a way that supports you.
Practice Breath Work
Take a few minutes to focus on your breath.
Slow your breathing down. Breathe in. Breathe out. Notice what happens when you give yourself a few minutes without doing anything else.
Slow, controlled breathing can help activate your body's relaxation response and may help lower heart rate and blood pressure in the moment.
You don't need an app, a class, or a special technique. Sometimes simply stopping and taking a few slow breaths is enough to remind your body that it can slow down.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep is one of the most restorative things you can give your body, and it doesn't cost anything.
Give yourself permission to go to bed earlier. Turn off the television. Put your phone down. Create a little more quiet around your bedtime.
We often try to compensate for poor sleep with more coffee, more motivation, and more effort, when sometimes what we really need is more rest.
Drink More Water
Before buying another supplement or adding another wellness product to your routine, take a look at the basics.
Are you drinking enough water throughout the day?
Hydration supports so many of the body's everyday processes, and it's one of the simplest things you can improve without spending a dime. Keep a glass or bottle nearby and make drinking water part of the routines you already have.
Give Yourself Time to Do Nothing
This might be one of the hardest ones.
Do nothing.
Not scrolling. Not answering emails. Not cleaning. Not checking something off your list.
Just sit. Look outside. Let your mind wander. Take a few deep breaths. Give yourself permission to not be productive for a few minutes.
We don't always need to fill every quiet moment. Sometimes your body and mind need a little space without another input coming in.
Put Down Your Phone
Give yourself some time away from the constant stream of information.
You don't have to delete social media or go completely off the grid. Just create a little space between yourself and everyone else's opinions, notifications, news, and expectations.
Even a short period without your phone can give you an opportunity to reconnect with what's happening around you—and with what's happening within you.
Come Back to Yourself
Sometimes restoring your health isn't about adding more. It's about removing some of the noise.
It's about slowing down enough to notice how you're feeling.
Getting outside.
Moving your body.
Eating in a way that makes you feel good.
Getting enough sleep.
Laughing.
Connecting.
Breathing.
Resting.
And maybe most importantly, it's about learning to listen to yourself again.
You don't always need another answer from someone else. Sometimes you need enough quiet to hear your own.
